Seven bars, one guide, somebody else’s plan.
Which crawl actually gets you past the door of the good places, what the shots are really worth, and whether the club entry at the end is included. Reviews of guided pub crawls and bar tours in the cities people drink in.
Four bar nights that set the standard.
A historic pub walk, a full party crawl, an izakaya run and a ghost tour that ends in a bar. What each one costs and what the drinkers who took it say.
01The civilised oneLondon Small Group Tour of Historical PubsFour old London pubs, small group, a guide who knows which snug was whose. No shots, no queue for a club at midnight.
02The full nightPrague: Pub Crawl with Unlimited Drinks & 5-floor Club EntryPrague from first bar to a five-floor club, with the drinks covered while you walk. The crawl everyone else is comparing against.
03The Tokyo versionTokyo Bar Hopping Tour in Shinjuku (All-You-Can-Drink + Dinner)Shinjuku on a Friday with someone who can order. Three bars, food at each, and none of it findable from the street.
04The strange oneAdults Only Haunted Pub Crawl in New OrleansNew Orleans after dark, drink in hand, stopping where people died. Adults only, and it fills weeks ahead.
Six cities that built their evening around the bar.
Ruin bars in a bombed-out courtyard, Georgian pubs with a ghost story each, standing bars up a Tokyo staircase, honky-tonks that never shut. Pick the city and see what a guided night there costs.
Haunted, honky-tonk or historic: three ways to drink your way across the States.
American crawls split cleanly. One walks you through a graveyard and into a bar, one keeps you on a strip where the music never stops, and one treats the tavern as a history lesson. They cost about the same and they are nothing alike.
The crawls more drinkers book than any others.

London Small Group Tour of Historical Pubs
Spend about three and a half hours walking from Newgate Street toward Covent Garden, stopping at four historic London pubs. Guides such as Tim, Chris, Freddie, Mark, Dave, and Ricky mix pub lore with stories of Fleet Street, Dickens, churches, courts, and literary London. Drinks cost extra, and the group is capped at 14 people.

The party crawl, and what “unlimited drinks” is worth.
A welcome shot at every bar, an hour of open bar somewhere in the middle, skip-the-queue entry to the club at the end. It is the cheapest way to drink in Europe and the wording matters: an hour of open bar is an hour, and the shots are small.
What a guided night out actually costs.
Every crawl on the site, grouped by the per-head price. The cheap end buys you a guide and a shot at each bar; the top end buys you a table, a bottle and a driver.
Where the pub is the point, not the pit stop.
London and Dublin sell the opposite of a party crawl: four pubs in three hours, a guide who can date the tiling, and a pint you are expected to finish before moving on. Book the small-group ones. The big ones lose people.
Every British and Irish crawl →In Tokyo the bar holds eight people and the menu is on the wall in kanji.
Golden Gai, the Shinjuku alleys and the Namba back streets are not walk-in territory unless you read the room and the language. A guide gets you through the curtain, orders the right thing and settles the cover charge nobody warned you about.

Five things that decide whether a crawl works for you.
A pub crawl is the one tour with an age limit, a dress code and a walking distance. None of it is hidden, but it is rarely on the first line of the listing.
- 01Bring the passportAge limits are 18 in most of Europe and 21 across the United States, and the clubs at the end check paper ID, not a photo of one.
- 02Trainers fail at the doorThe VIP club entry that comes with a crawl is only worth anything if the door lets you in. Shoes and a collar, not shorts.
- 03Count the walkingA seven-bar night covers real distance on hard streets. The small-group pub walks are three hours and four stops, deliberately.
- 04Read the drinks lineA welcome shot at each bar and an hour of open bar are two different offers. The second one starts when the guide says so.
- 05Pick the night, not the dayMost crawls run Thursday to Saturday and thin out midweek; the ghost and history walks run every night and sell out earliest in summer.
Three nights out you can only have in one city.
Party crawls are the same in every capital. These are not: a bar in a condemned building, a lane of eight-seat bars, and a tour that stops where the bodies were found.

The ruin bars
In the old Jewish quarter, landlords stopped repairing buildings and someone put a bar in one anyway. Szimpla Kert came first and the rest followed into courtyards full of bath tubs, wired-up televisions and a Trabant with seats in it. Guided crawls exist because the good ones are unmarked and the queue outside Szimpla at midnight is an hour long.

Golden Gai and the alleys
Six lanes of two-storey wooden buildings survived the redevelopment of Shinjuku, and each holds a bar with six to eight seats. Many charge a cover, some are regulars-only, none has an English menu. A guide picks the ones that welcome visitors and gets the first round ordered before anyone has to point.

Drinking with the dead
Savannah lets you carry an open drink on the street in the historic district, which is why the ghost tour and the pub crawl merged here and nowhere else. The route runs between eighteenth-century taverns and the squares built over burial grounds, and the guides are usually theatre people.
